How to choose the right celebration to really thank your team for a great year

Ask them: like with any project, it is wise to understand the needs and desires of your target audience.  So don’t second guess it...use an online survey tool to find out (we use and recommend Survey Monkey – it’s excellent and for simple’s free).  Sure, you won’t be able to please everyone, but you’ll get some great insights.

  • History: what have you done in the past?  Is it a tradition your team would be sad to lose?  Or are they completely over it?  The answers to these questions might give you some clues on which way to go.
  • Your goals: Sure, you want to thank the team for their hard work, but you might have an organisational need as well.  Different events can have very different outcomes:
    • A night out for staff: This can be a good option for a bit of team building.  People have the opportunity to relax in a new setting and really get to know each other.  They can find common ground never discovered over coffee by the photocopier.  You could do something memorable, like dinner in a renowned restaurant, or karaoke, or a river cruise.  Perhaps dinner at a spectacular location or a counter meal and a band?  Choices, choices...
    • A night out for staff and their partners: This option can demonstrate to the team how valued they are, and can build strong connections between the staff which in turn increases satisfaction and loyalty.  How about dinner and a theatre show?  For larger companies you could create a customised event in a grand ballroom in an iconic city venue.  For smaller companies booking a private room in a restaurant may suit the bill.  Or perhaps a weekend winery tour.  Decisions, decisions...
    • A family day: A corporate family day can be a lovely way to reward your team for a great year.  Don’t forget, the core reason most of these people are fronting up day in, day out, is to provide for their loved ones.  These guys are important, and if you show your staff that you care about their family too...they’re going to be really chuffed.  So think balloon artists, face painters, jumping castles, show bags, pony rides, moonlight cinema, grass skiing, special guest appearances – from Scooby Doo to Peppa Pig to Santa Claus – this will be a day to remember and the kids will be counting down the days til next year.

There are a bazillion alternatives so you are only limited by your own imagination.  If you are struggling on that front, then This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
